What a fantastic birthday present! To drive around Northern Scotland in an open top Porsche – wow!

First night was Durness and the wonderful Mackays hostel – well appointed and a lovely walk along truly stunning beaches as we witnessed a wonderful sunset. Early start the next morning and the ferry trip over to Cape Wrath – pretty much as remote as you can get on mainland Scotland. Out there on a shoogly wee bus, walk around and coffee at the UK’s most remote (now remotely operated) lighthouse.

Next, we’d liked to have walked out to Sandalwood bay and the amazing beach there but time didn’t allow, so a stop at another amazing beach at Achmelvich (also Youth Hostel and campsite). We set camp at Reef, just beyond Achiltibuie a stunning spot overlooking the Summer Isles and a short walk to the wonderful AmFuaran pub. The isles were made famous in the cult movie ‘The Wicker Man’.

Finally, Sunday am and another beautiful day as we drove past the enigmatic Stac Pollaidh and onwards back to Inverness (AKA Inversneckie). We had followed part of the famous N500 route but not done the whole thing – it’s quite easy to opt in and out as suites your own plan. Driving around in an open top Porsche with the wind through my hair (ok – what’s left) rejuvenated me. The car is mid-engined so there is front and rear boot space – we were able to camp and carry food. I would rate the experience 9.99 out of a possible 10 – Live the dream!

Many thanks again to Christine and Rob for helping us have a great road-trip experience in Skye

Our road-trip in Isle of Skye and surrounding areas was spectacular with this greatly responsive car, which embraces the beautiful country roads in the area. The amazing views, fresh breeze and beautiful scents of Scotland were all around us in an open-top car – and will always have a special place in our hearts. Thank you, Rob and Christine – it wouldn’t have been the same with another car. We look forward to coming back again!
